MLB Draft Profile: James Island’s Taj Marchand

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – Taj Marchand picked up hockey at a young age, just like his father Hugo, but baseball also drew him in during the off-season. From defensive blue lines to the bright white lines of the diamond, the younger Marchand grew to love baseball just as deeply. “Just being out here, especially as I got older, the feeling before a game, stepping foot on a baseball field every day—that’s the reason I love it,” said Taj Marchand, a James Island Charter alum.
Marchand has been a standout on the Island since eighth grade. James Island head coach Matt Spivey recalls recognizing Taj’s potential early after spotting him at an elementary school camp. “We put him in the older group, and he proved he belonged there. It was definitely a name you circled and followed through his middle school years. We were fortunate he came here in the eighth grade, and the rest has been history,” Spivey noted.
Taj left a lasting mark with the Trojans, graduating as back-to-back 5A Player of the Year and helping James Island Charter win three consecutive state titles. He emerged as a big-time player who rose to the occasion when all eyes were on him. “Recently it’s just been that I’ve done everything up to this point to put me in this spot. It’s been a long journey, but it’s definitely been a fun process, especially for this part of my life I’m in,” Taj explained.
Spivey praised Taj’s consistency and preparation, saying, “It goes back to that slow heartbeat and the preparation he’s put into this game. He trusts all the work he’s done and is able to come out time and time again, putting up numbers that are nearly identical to the year before—something that’s almost unheard of.” Beyond raw talent and statistics, Spivey stresses that Taj’s humility, work ethic, and ability to elevate those around him are what truly set him apart.
Marchand’s success is inseparable from Spivey and James Island Charter High School. “He’s elevated everything about this program,” Spivey said. “The best part is, as talented as he is, he allows us to coach him. I think that plays a huge role for everyone else in our program because it uplifts them too.” Taj echoed that sentiment, reflecting on his time: “I’ll never forget the five years I played here for Coach Spivey. It’ll stay with me for the rest of my life—it was an unforgettable five years.”
Over the last three seasons, Taj Marchand’s name has become a familiar refrain. This weekend, his life could change with one phone call. “A dream come true, definitely an emotional moment—having my parents here and seeing everything they’ve done for me. It’ll all be worth it when they see my name on TV,” Taj said.
The 2026 MLB Draft begins this Saturday at 1 p.m., and Taj is positioned as a top 50 prospect. His journey—from a local kid with a love of baseball and hockey to a potential major league player—has been defined by drive, discipline, and a team-first mindset that has shaped him and his program alike.
