As the Dodgers made the trade to acquire Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, there’s a chance it could end up becoming a rental, as this MLB insider predicts how the pitcher’s free agency will go.So far this season, Skubal has pitched a 2.84 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, with 164 strikeouts and a 9-7 record in 23 starts between Detroit and Los Angeles; with the latter, he’s recorded a 2.93 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, with 48 strikeouts and a 2-2 record. Though he had surgery earlier in the season to remove loose bodies in his elbow, the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner still has been productive.ESPN’s Jeff Passan believes that the contract he will receive in the offseason “will be huge,” though there are caveats like his age. Passan would cite that no pitcher 30 years old or older has “received more than Stephen Strasburg’s $245 million (on a seven-year deal) in free agency,” though the insider thinks he’ll “get double that.”Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)“Provided there is no salary cap, Skubal could get double that,” Passan wrote.Jeff Passan speaks more on Tarik Skubal’s future dealPassan went into what a contract like that would look like for a team, with the insider saying that “a deal of that magnitude would presumably be for at least a decade.“The sort of commitment teams might balk at because of his age,” Passan wrote. “But someone is going to pay an exorbitant amount for his services. And he is going to be at the heart of the salary cap debate all the while, because barely a handful of teams are interested in paying $50 million a year for 33 starts…Skubal is what a starting pitcher is supposed to look like. And he’s the salvation of this class.”It remains to be seen what the contract will look like for Skubal, as his main focus is on helping the Dodgers win their third straight World Series.Related: MLB rumors: Bo Bichette’s upcoming free agency decision gets ‘coin flip’ admissionRelated: Updated MLB standings, playoff preview as of September 9 as Guardians pursue White Sox in AL Central
