MLB reduces Willson Contreras’ suspension for scrum with Nationals to 5 games; Red Sox 1B will return after All-Star break

Boston Red Sox fans will have to wait for All-Star Week to see their standout first baseman back in action. Willson Contreras is set to miss five games due to a suspension, including Thursday’s 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox, stemming from the scrum he was involved in with the Washington Nationals at Fenway Park on June 30. Prior to Thursday’s game in Chicago, MLB announced that, after Contreras appealed, his seven-game ban would be reduced by two games.
Nationals starting pitcher Cade Cavalli, who sparked the benches-clearing incident, also saw his seven-game suspension trimmed to five. Cavalli had already begun serving his punishment on Monday, but he won’t have to miss his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday against the New York Yankees.
As for Contreras, he will be unavailable for Boston until Game 2 of a July 17 doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, he is still slated to participate in the Home Run Derby and could appear in the All-Star Game, now that he’s been named as a replacement for Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The suspensions trace back to a moment when Cavalli struck out Contreras in the fourth inning of an 8-1 Nationals victory. Cavalli was heard yelling, “Sit down, boy!” for which he later apologized. Contreras began advancing toward Cavalli, appearing puzzled by the remark, which escalated into a confrontation that culminated in a benches-clearing scene and three ejections, including Contreras, who threw his helmet toward Cavalli.
This isn’t Contreras’s first incident in recent weeks. The week prior, the Venezuela native was involved in another benches-clearing clash, this time with the New York Yankees. In the wake of that confrontation, Contreras issued a heartfelt apology, describing the moment as a “very emotional time,” a sentiment he shared while his homeland was coping with devastating earthquakes.
Despite the disciplinary drama, Contreras has been enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. The four-time All-Star carries a .285 batting average, a .379 on-base percentage, and a .542 slugging percentage, along with 20 home runs and 61 RBIs. Boston is hopeful that the absence of their star first baseman won’t derail their momentum as they push toward the second half of the season.
On the field, the Red Sox have started to turn things around. After sweeping the Chicago White Sox in a three-game set, Boston improved to 43-48 on the year and, more notably, posted an impressive 11-2 record over their last 13 games. The team is looking to carry this strong form into the rest of July, even as their lineup faces the disruption of Contreras’s absence.
For fans and followers seeking improved SEO coverage of Contreras’s suspension and return, the key angles include the reduced suspensions following the appeal, Contreras’s planned All-Star Game and Home Run Derby participation, Cavalli’s partial suspension reduction, the timing of Contreras’s return (Game 2 of July 17 twin bill against Tampa Bay), and the ongoing impact on the Red Sox’s lineup as they pursue continued improvement in the second half of the season.
