Croatia’s Luka Modric wore a shirt honoring his 200th appearance for the country after a 2-1 World Cup Group L win over Ghana, a performance that sparked memories of his prime. The 40-year-old midfielder delivered a standout display that helped secure second place in the group and a spot in the World Cup knockout stage, where Croatia will meet Portugal and star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Teammate Nikola Vlasic praised Modric, saying, “I swear to you. It’s as if he’s turned back the clock by 10 years. That was one of the best performances I’ve seen him put on in a national team jersey.” Modric assisted the winning goal with a precise corner that Vlasic headed into the net, clinching the victory.
According to Opta, Modric became the oldest player ever to record a World Cup assist. He not only set up the decisive goal but also dominated the midfield, delivering relentless tackles and repeatedly clearing dangerous situations in Croatia’s box. “He plays as if he were 20 years old. He was incredible today. He’s our leader and our best player. He can play as long as he wants. He’ll stay at the top of his game,” said Petar Sucic, who scored Croatia’s opening goal.
Modric has not yet indicated whether this will be his fifth World Cup appearance’s final outing. Coach Zlatko Dalic noted that it’s likely Croatia will have to continue without their exceptional talisman in the future, acknowledging that Modric is acutely aware this could be his last World Cup and that he is giving his all to bid farewell in the best possible way. Dalic also expressed a wish for Modric to stay healthy and to continue representing Croatia for as long as possible.
