In Los Angeles on Wednesday night, Mookie Betts came through with the go-ahead run, singling with two strikes in the eighth inning to lift the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the series finale. Betts ended a nine-pitch at-bat by lining a ball into center off Rockies reliever Antonio Senzatela (8-1), bringing home Tommy Edman, who had singled and moved to third on Freddie Freeman’s double.
The win gave the Dodgers two of three in the series, preventing Colorado from clinching its first series victory at Dodger Stadium since August 2021. In the eighth, the Rockies loaded the bases against Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia, but Edgardo Henriquez (4-0) came on and induced Karros to fly out for the third out. Tanner Scott then retired the side in the ninth to notch his 13th save.
Colorado had a rough start as Gabriel Hughes struggled in his major league debut, surrendering three runs in the first inning. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed Tommy Edman to score on a wild pitch after Edman singled, and Kyle Tucker added a two-run RBI single. After that rocky start, Hughes settled down and retired 15 consecutive batters before Max Muncy’s double in the sixth. The Alaska native also faced Shohei Ohtani, whom he retired three times, including a strikeout. Ohtani, who homered in the first two games of the series, struck out again in the eighth on his bobblehead night.
The Rockies managed to answer in the eighth with three runs to tie the game at 3. Kyle Karros and Edouard Julien connected on solo homers off Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki in the second inning. The Dodgers briefly took the lead again in the third when Brett Sullivan walked, advanced to second on Sasaki’s wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout, and score on Mickey Moniak’s sacrifice fly. Sasaki allowed three runs and four hits over six innings, striking out five and issuing one walk.
Looking ahead, Colorado’s schedule included RHP Ryan Feltner (3-2, 4.27 ERA) set to start Thursday against San Francisco, with LHP Robbie Ray (8-6, 3.45) also slated to appear. For the Dodgers, after an off day, Ohtani (8-2, 1.79) was planned to start Friday against Arizona in the series opener.
