MotoGP is moving toward hosting its 2027 season launch in Rio de Janeiro, where the championship’s new 850cc machines are anticipated to be unveiled. The Brazilian city is among the options MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (MotoGP SEG), the commercial rights holder of the world championship, is weighing as a successor to Kuala Lumpur, which hosted the 2026 edition.
Among several possibilities under consideration, Miami initially stood out as the leading candidate, driven by the owner’s desire to broaden the series’ footprint in the United States. However, Motorsport.com has learned that Rio de Janeiro has recently emerged as the frontrunner to stage the event that will formally kick off the 2027 campaign. While negotiations with local organizers are not yet finalized, multiple MotoGP teams already expect to travel to Brazil early next year.
The event would mark only the third collective MotoGP season-launch, following the first-ever ceremony before the 2025 campaign in Bangkok and this year’s event in Kuala Lumpur. Singapore had been the original preferred destination for 2026, but logistical challenges led organizers to retain the Malaysian capital, where pre-season testing commenced soon afterward.
From a commercial perspective, Rio represents a logical choice, especially after MotoGP’s return to Brazil last year and Diogo Moreira’s promotion to the premier class. At the same time, staging the launch in Rio would pose a substantial logistical challenge during one of the most demanding periods of the year, when schedules leave little room for flexibility.
Although the exact date remains to be set, Motorsport.com understands that MotoGP SEG favors scheduling the event as early as possible, ideally before the opening pre-season test at Sepang, which is slated for the final week of January. That timing would require riders to interrupt winter preparations to fly to South America before making the long journey back to Malaysia just a few days later. Under this plan, teams would need to ship their prototypes to Brazil well in advance, along with the technicians needed to prepare and maintain the bikes, with riders and senior management arriving last.
One of the primary obstacles would be fitting each manufacturer’s individual season-launch presentation into an already crowded calendar. These standalone launches remain highly valuable for sponsors because they provide exclusive media exposure rather than sharing the spotlight with rivals. The calendar would remain equally tight even if the collective launch were staged after the two pre-season tests and before the opening round of the 2027 season, which is expected to take place on the first weekend of March, most likely in Thailand.
