Mowbray ‘everything the club needs’ – Cantwell

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

Blackburn Rovers captain Todd Cantwell believes Tony Mowbray is the ideal choice to lead the club, as the manager returns for a second stint at Ewood Park after his appointment in June. Cantwell explained that the squad needed someone who truly understands the players and can articulate a clear plan, while also possessing the people skills to match. He noted that many in the dressing room are relatively new to England, or even to the league, and, with the club fighting near the bottom of the table, they require time to adapt. In Cantwell’s view, Mowbray strikes that crucial balance, and he is confident that the manager represents the key to an exciting period ahead for Blackburn.
Last season, Rovers finished 20th in the Championship, five points above the relegation zone. The club sacked head coach Valerien Ismael in February and appointed Michael O’Neill, the Northern Ireland boss, as interim manager for the remainder of the campaign. O’Neill declined the permanent role, paving the way for Mowbray to return to management after more than a year away, having been dismissed by West Brom in April 2025.
Cantwell praised Mowbray as “everything the club needs” at this moment, highlighting his experience and the breadth of his know-how. He added that Mowbray’s familiarity with Blackburn, having previously coached there, is a valuable asset given the unique challenges and support networks that each club possesses. Cantwell stressed that the club faces its own set of obstacles, and having a manager who understands those local dynamics can make a real difference.
