NASCAR Atlanta winners and losers as Ryan Blaney wins, Bubba Wallace penalized on final lap

Ryan Blaney dominated the action at EchoPark Speedway on July 12 and 13, with a strong effort that lasted through a three-hour weather delay. Yet even after the restart, the race required one last clocking pass on the drafting sprint to secure the victory in the Quaker State 400 NASCAR Cup Series race in Atlanta. The eventual win came via a major push from Christopher Bell, who helped Blaney slip past Carson Hocevar and Bubba Wallace on the trio of turns and into the tri-oval, setting up a final-lap move that sealed Blaney’s triumph.
As the white flag flew, Carson Hocevar still held the lead, but Blaney and Wallace mounted late charges into turns 3 and 4, producing a three-wide dash to the finish. Blaney emerged on top, while Wallace faced post-race penalties for dropping below the yellow line on the backstretch, a ruling that reshaped the final order. Hocevar, meanwhile, finished a strong third and could be heard signing on the radio during both the overtime scramble and his post-race interview.
The NASCAR Cup standings after Atlanta show Blaney 65 points behind the leader, Denny Hamlin, despite his second win of the season and a sweep of the stages. Blaney’s victory also underscored the push from Bell, whose No. 20 Chevrolet gave the No. 12 a crucial assist exiting turn 4 through the tri-oval, enabling Blaney to overtake the leaders in the closing laps. The win paints a picture of a possible three-way fight for the regular-season title, especially with a string of short-track events on the horizon that could shake up the standings. At a minimum, Blaney has climbed to at least third in the points, already ahead of Ty Gibbs by a comfortable margin, with the potential for more as the season progresses.
Ford has faced a challenging 2026 season overall, but Blaney has been a bright spot for the manufacturer, delivering a standout performance that kept Ford in play. Erik Jones managed a modest gain, moving to 16th and hovering near the Chase cutline, as the No. 43 Legacy Motor Club Toyota delivered a notably strong run. Jones remained inside the top 15 for much of the night and surged to fifth in overtime, highlighting his continued improvement and the team’s late-season momentum. Jones’s performance reinforced his growing reputation for resilience on varied tracks, a trend that Legacy Motor Club will hope to build upon as they navigate the remaining short tracks on the schedule.
Bubba Wallace entered the night as a serious contender, maintaining strong pace throughout the race. He was in the mix for the win in a high-profile three-wide sequence with Blaney and Hocevar, but a late-backstretch maneuver triggered a penalty that dashed any immediate chance at victory. The penalty relegated Wallace to 29th at the finish, illustrating how one decision in the closing laps can dramatically alter the outcome on a race that was otherwise dominated by the top teams. The race at Atlanta thus served as a reminder of the delicate balance between aggression and adherence to the rules, particularly in the late stages of a superspeedway-like, drafting-dominant event.
Among the other notable performances, Hocevar’s run at the front near the end underscored his potential as a rising contender, as he briefly led and remained in contention through the final laps. His performance, along with strong showings from other contenders, contributed to what was a competitive and eventful Quaker State 400, with Blaney’s victory highlighting the ongoing drama and dynamic shifting of the Cup Series standings as the schedule advances toward North Wilkesboro and beyond.
