A heartfelt tribute to Kyle Busch was not able to make it onto the Lime Rock Park racetrack. Nitro Motorsports had hoped to honor the late two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion with a special paint scheme for ARCA Menards Series driver Thomas Annunziata during Friday’s race at the Connecticut road course. But the plan had to be abandoned before it could become a reality. The inspired scheme, drawn from Busch’s iconic yellow M&M’s Toyota from his championship-winning NASCAR days, came together only after the 41-year-old’s sudden passing in May. A Nitro Motorsports representative explained that the concept came together quickly, but there simply wasn’t enough time to complete the project before race weekend.
As a result, spectators were left with a reminder of how deeply Busch’s legacy continues to resonate within the NASCAR garage, even though the tribute did not reach the green flag. For Annunziata, the tribute had a deeply personal significance. Shortly after Busch’s death, the 21-year-old revealed that the NASCAR Hall of Famer had been his favorite driver since childhood and had played a major role in shaping his own racing ambitions. “He’s one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with racing in the first place,” Annunziata wrote. “Ever since I got into NASCAR, part of me always hoped that one day I’d get the chance to race against him.” Those sentiments served as the driving force behind Nitro Motorsports’ tribute concept, which would have seen Busch’s unmistakable M&M’s colors adorning the No. 70 Toyota during Friday’s ARCA Menards Series race at Lime Rock Park.
However, by Thursday the team confirmed that the tribute plans had been scrapped. A Nitro Motorsports representative told WBTV that the idea “came together quickly,” but the timeline simply “didn’t work out” for everyone involved. Although the tribute won’t reach the track, Annunziata’s admiration for Busch remains evident. The New Jersey native is enjoying the strongest season of his young career, sitting second in the ARCA Menards Series championship standings behind Nitro Motorsports teammate Jake Bollman as the Lime Rock Park event approached. He has recorded top-10 finishes in nine of the first 11 races, including five top-five results.
Lime Rock Park holds special meaning for Annunziata as well; it was there in 2025 that he earned his first ARCA Menards Series victory, starting from the pole and leading for a substantial portion of the race. While fans won’t see the planned Kyle Busch tribute on the track this weekend, the backstory behind it underscores the enduring impact Busch has had on a new generation of racers. Even without the painted tribute crossing the finish line, Annunziata’s reflections make clear that Busch’s influence extends well beyond championships and race wins, continuing to mold the aspirations and careers of young drivers who grew up looking up to him for inspiration and guidance within the sport.
