Kyle Larson picked a good time to have the best points day of the NASCAR season.Just two weeks after capturing his first win of the year and one week after rising to the top of the standings, Larson dominated the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. He claimed the first two stages and the win while establishing a new track record by leading 235 laps. The Hendrick Motorsports driver also laid down the fastest lap, giving him 76 points on the afternoon.Buy our Dale Earnhardt book hereThe previous season high had been Ryan Blaney’s 75 at Atlanta in July.“What a day,” Larson said. “I thought we’d have a good shot. I didn’t think that we’d have a max points type of day, so I’m just thrilled.”Here are three takeaways.1. Kyle Larson overtook Chase Briscoe to complete dominant performanceDespite all of Larson’s work, he had to launch a comeback for the win.Following their final pit stops, Chase Briscoe chipped away at Larson’s margin. Briscoe overtook Larson with 30 laps left and remained in front for the next 23 circuits. But with seven to go, Larson passed Briscoe and held on from there.“I really thought, when Chase got by, he was just going to stretch out,” Larson said. “But I got some lines going where I could just kind of settle in and try to take care of my tires. “I think it’s just easier to be the hunter than the hunted. With me out front, I’m just defending and trying to guess on what lines are fast. When he got in front of me, I could see he started getting really loose.”2. Denny Hamlin stays second in NASCAR standingsLarson arrived at Kansas with a one-point cushion in the standings after slipping past Denny Hamlin last week at Bristol.Larson extended that gap to 26 points with his masterful effort, but Hamlin limited the damage. He placed third, following only Larson and runner-up Austin Cindric.Overall, Hamlin collected 51 points.“We’re still in it, still really close,” Hamlin said. “We just got to put together days like this, and we’ve also got to win. We’ve got to win a few races between now and the end of the year.”Christopher Bell sits third in the standings, 50 points behind first.3. NASCAR Chase schedule pivots to Las VegasNext week will mark the halfway point of NASCAR’s postseason. The South Point 400 will serve as the fifth event in the 10-race Chase. It will take place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a 1.5-mile oval like Kansas. And just like the Hollywood Casino 400, the race will feature 267 laps.It will get the green flag a few minutes after 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 4. USA Network will be the TV host.Hamlin claimed the regular-season checkers at Vegas in March. He’ll look to make up some lost ground on Larson. This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: NASCAR takeaways: Kyle Larson has best day of Cup Series season at KansasOur editors independently choose our recommendations.
