NASCAR Throws Lightning Caution at EchoPark Speedway During Quaker State 400

By admin — In News — July 13, 2026

Lightning halted Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at EchoPark Speedway, suspending the Quaker State 400 at Walmart due to severe weather ahead of the 1.54-mile Georgia oval. NASCAR waved the caution on Lap 108 as a line of storms moved toward the track, triggering the sport’s weather safety protocol and forcing a temporary stoppage while conditions were evaluated.
Across NASCAR’s discipline, a different approach governs weather-related suspensions compared to typical rain delays. When lightning is detected within the sanctioning body’s designated safety radius around the track, competition must be halted. Once the lightning protocol is activated, a mandatory 30-minute clock begins. If another lightning strike is detected before that timer expires, the countdown resets, extending the delay and delaying the race further. Weather radar showed storms approaching EchoPark Speedway, with lightning observed in the vicinity as officials instituted the safety procedures.
As of the latest update, NASCAR has not announced a restart time. The earliest possible resumption would be 30 minutes after the last detected lightning strike within NASCAR’s safety radius. If additional lightning were detected, the countdown would restart, potentially prolonging the postponement and creating a longer interruption of the Quaker State 400. This weather interruption comes at a pivotal moment in the Cup Series regular season, as one of the sport’s marquee events looms large with several races remaining before the season’s conclusion.
At the time of the stoppage, Ryan Blaney led the field to green after earning the pole in qualifying, with Team Penske teammate Joey Logano lining up on the front row alongside him. The delay adds an extra layer of anticipation to an event that has already drawn significant attention, given its position in the season schedule and the competitive landscape of the Cup Series.
This story will be updated as NASCAR provides additional information about the weather delay, potential restart times, and any changes to the schedule. Fans and teams are urged to follow official NASCAR channels for the latest updates on the Quaker State 400 at EchoPark Speedway and the status of its ongoing weather postponement.
