ESPN NBA analyst Iman Shumpert enjoyed broadcasting the Phoenix Suns’ 100-88 NBA Summer League victory on Wednesday, July 15, over the Detroit Pistons at Thomas & Mack Center. The NBA champion laughed, playfully reacted to dunks and 3s, reminisced about his playing days and provided insight into team concepts and strategies.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhen asked in the second half about his expectations for the Suns this upcoming season, a candid Shumpert called for the franchise’s all-time leading scorer to close the close games.“I need them to understand that Devin Booker needs to shoot more than Jalen Green,” Shumpert said. “At the end of the games especially. It’s weird being on teams that don’t really know who is going to close or what’s going to happen in the final minutes of the game.”The Suns needed two play-in games to reach the playoffs last season as an eighth seed under first-year head coach Jordan Ott.“Those teams are usually on the bubble so to speak in how they’re going to do in a postseason matchup,” Shumpert continued. “But the teams you know that are going to live and die a certain way or play a certain way through a certain player, it’s all about is that player healthy and available or is that player out of foul trouble and available at the end of the game where we know exactly what’s going to happen.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIn Phoenix’s first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Green attempted a team-high six shots a game in the fourth quarter. The then-defending NBA champions swept the Suns in four games.Dillon Brooks was second in fourth-quarter hoists at 5.3, with Booker third at 4.0.Booker being the team’s main playmaker factored in taking fewer shots during winning time, but to Shumpert’s point, Green launched two more shots per game than Booker in the fourth.“They just kind of searched last year.
