In the aftermath of the 2026 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons served as one of the more active teams over the past several days. In the first round, the Pistons made the aggressive move to trade a trio of future second round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies so that they’d have the chance to land Stanford guard Ebuka Okorie at No. 17 overall.
As it turned out, Ebuka was a player that the Pistons had heavily scouted throughout the pre-draft process, so he was highlighted as a prospect that Detroit felt could really help them in the future. Ebuka was one of the nation’s elite in terms of self-creation last year as a freshman, and he still has a lot of room to grow as a 19-year old about to enter the NBA.
“I can’t speak to the terms of the trade, but I am allowed to speak about the player,” Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon said after the draft. “So, super excited about Ebuka. Watched him for a while and he just exploded onto the scene, but high-character young man who loves the game of basketball. He is very, very serious about the game. We think he’ll come in here and fit with this culture, with this environment. Incredible speed with ball in hand. I think if I recall correctly, he was up there in the country with and-ones in the paint, especially at the point guard position– might’ve been number one. Obviously, as you guys know, he’s a top three scorer as a freshman in the country. What he did in a very good conference in the ACC hasn’t been done much. So, we’re incredibly excited to have a guy like that, a weapon who can get paint touches at will and can help not only score for us in the half-court and the full-court but also help distribute and have a little bit more creation for us all over the court.”
With a bevy of talented players still on the board at No. 17 including a few sharp-shooters like Cameron Carr, the Pistons decided to pursue Okorie due to how dynamic he is with the rock in his hands. Since Stanford was a little light in the depth department last season, Okorie took the onus upon himself to generate scoring as a Cardinal, and that’s one of the most attractive aspects of his game to the Pistons.
“I think his ability to get in the paint just non-stop with speed, with pick-and-roll, without pick-and-roll,” Langdon said. “Obviously, very crafty with ball in hand, low turnover, can shoot the ball, high free throw rate, knocks down free throws at a great percentage. So, I think another guy with ball in hand that can help push the pace and help the creation with our team moving forward.”

Due to the nature of the NBA rules, Langdon was not able to go into much depth about the terms of the Pistons’ trade with the Grizzlies, but the Detroit exec made it clear that the organization coveted Okorie enough to use multiple assets in order to acquire the 6-1 guard who has a 6-8 wingspan.
“We wanted to go get the guy we wanted,” Langdon said. “He’s a guy that we targeted in this process, watched a lot of film on him. The whole second half of the season, he’s a guy that we liked and thought would fit what we’re trying to do here in terms of playing faster and having another guy that can be on the floor handling the ball and not only be scoring but creating for the guys on the floor with him.”
Since Okorie will be joining a Pistons backcourt that’s already loaded with Cade Cunningham, Daniss Jenkins, Caris LeVert, Marcus Sasser and Chaz Lanier, it’s more than possible that Detroit could part ways with one of LeVert, Sasser or Lanier through a trade. The Pistons could still serve to add a high-level three-point shooter to their squad, so Detroit is expected to remain active over the next few weeks.
