Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has joined the chorus of people with an opinion on Caitlin Clark. The Fever star was one of the topics in his latest post on Substack. He doesn’t think that Clark should be considered the face of the WNBA because other players that have come before have accomplished so much more.Abdul-Jabbar was reacting to the letter sent by Republicans to the WNBA asking them to protect Clark. Abdul-Jabbar thinks Congress should be more concerned with the online harassment players face than Clark taking a few hard fouls, but the portion of this article making headlines like the one above is the fact that he said Clark shouldn’t be considered the face of the league.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementVia Substack:Eleven members of Congress wrote a letter calling Caitlin Clark “the face of your league.” At least they got the marketing department’s talking point right. Don’t get me wrong: Clark is a very good, possibly even a great, player. But calling any one player the face of the league, absent the sort of on-court and cross-platform dominance of a Michael Jordan or a LeBron James, is an insult to an awful lot of great players, starting with A’ja Wilson, who has won three titles and four MVP awards in her first seven years in the WNBA.MORE: Adam Silver reportedly convinced WNBA to suspend Alyssa Thomas for Caitlin Clark incidentWilson’s resume is unassailable. But the attention Clark has brought to the league is also something that can’t be question. They’re both faces of the WNBA along with other players like perennial MVP candidates like Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier who hasn’t even played yet this season. Then there are players like Sabrina Ionescu, Paige Bueckers and even Angel Reese. This could be a good problem for the league to have, but right now it’s just another reason for people to argue. Even Abdul-Jabbar sounds like he’s anti-Clark here. What does “cross-platform dominance” mean if you’re not talking about the player starring in more national ad campaigns than the rest of the league combined?AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt’s almost not even worth thinking about. And yet here we are again.
