There’s something special about being recognized in the place where your story began. NFL players spend their careers performing for millions, and while Eagles stars have earned Pro Bowls, championships, and big contracts, some of the most meaningful moments come back home, where the people who watched them grow never forget their roots. Eagles fans have witnessed this countless times over the years. Darius Slay received the keys to his hometown of Brunswick, Georgia, and others have come home for jersey retirements, hometown parades, or special ceremonies honoring what they’ve accomplished since high school. Lately, the spotlight has shone on Nebraska. An Omaha television station highlighted two Cornhusker State natives now wearing midnight green: Eagles starting center Cam Jurgens and rookie tight end Cole Payton. Two different journeys, one home state for two Eagles.
Jurgens’ path is well documented. The former Nebraska standout joined Philadelphia as a second-round pick in 2022, tasked with eventually replacing franchise icon Jason Kelce. That’s a daunting challenge, but Jurgens embraced it. Now in his fifth season as the Eagles’ starting center, he’s established himself as a crucial piece of the offensive line and has earned two Pro Bowl nods. Payton’s story is just beginning. The fifth-round rookie arrived in Philadelphia after starring for the North Dakota State Bison, the same program that produced former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. Like Jurgens, his roots trace back to Nebraska, giving local fans another hometown player to rally behind.
Nebraska has a storied football legacy. While the Cornhuskers no longer dominate college football as they once did under coach Tom Osborne, football remains deeply woven into the state’s fabric. NFL players and coaches who reach the league are celebrated long after they leave, and even Osborne’s politics reflect the state’s strong fan base. No one can predict what honors await Jurgens or Payton when their playing days end—perhaps jersey retirements, dedicated streets or fields, or another round of ceremonial hometown recognition. Those conversations are years away. For now, one thing is clear: no matter how many games they play in Philadelphia, Cam Jurgens and Cole Payton will always have another fan base cheering them on hundreds of miles away. Sometimes there’s no greater honor than knowing home is still watching.
