Nelly Korda is going for her third consecutive major championship at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. She teed off with many supporters in the gallery in Chaska, Minnesota, during the first round on Thursday, June 26.
“A lot of posters with, ‘Go, Nelly, go!'” Korda said. “They take so much time out of their day to do that, to come out and support us, and it was quite amazing.”
Korda shot a 2-under 70 at Hazeltine National Golf Club, seven strokes off the lead, but good enough to be in contention with three rounds to go. She had five birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. Ina Yoon had nine birdies in the first round and was at the top of the leaderboard.
“It was solid,” Korda said. “Honestly, I just made one bad swing, which ended up in a double. But overall, pretty happy with my day.”
Korda, the World No. 1, claimed the first two LPGA major championships of the year with wins at the Chevron Championship in April and the U.S. Women’s Open earlier this month.
USA Today will keep track of her round Friday.
