Netflix Recruiting Kevin Costner for ‘Field of Dreams’ Game

Netflix Sports is courting Hollywood star Kevin Costner to join its first-ever MLB Field of Dreams game coverage, according to Elle Duncan. In an interview with Front Office Sports about Netflix’s Home Run Derby coverage on July 13, Duncan expressed excitement about hosting the MLB at Field of Dreams game between the Twins and Phillies on August 13 and suggested Costner, who starred in 1989’s Field of Dreams and remains a big baseball fan, would be a perfect fit for the coverage.
Duncan noted that Netflix consistently makes compelling pitches and hopes Costner will participate in some capacity since he is closely associated with the Field of Dreams brand. Costner previously took part in Fox Sports’ coverage of the inaugural Field of Dreams game in 2021, walking out of the cornfield, narrating the pregame, addressing the crowd, and shaking hands with Yankees and White Sox players, famously asking, “Is this heaven?”
Duncan, who leads Netflix’s multi-sport coverage as a former SportsCenter anchor, will host a robust team for the Home Run Derby coverage at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. Analysts will include former MLB stars Barry Bonds, CC Sabathia, Hunter Pence, and Anthony Rizzo, with Matt Vasgersian and Lauren Shehadi handling play-by-play and reporting duties alongside Duncan. The Derby format this year dispenses with a timer for the first time in a decade.
A month later, Duncan will be in Dyersville, Iowa, hosting Netflix’s coverage of MLB’s third Field of Dreams game. This season marks Netflix’s debut as an MLB rightsholder, offering a slate of standalone events such as Opening Night, the Home Run Derby, and the Field of Dreams game.
Costner, the Oscar-winning actor-director, recently starred in Paramount’s Yellowstone. Fox had aired the first two Field of Dreams games in 2021–2022 with Joe Buck and Joe Davis on play-by-play, John Smoltz as an analyst, and Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci as reporters.
Duncan, a decade-long ESPN veteran, joined Netflix in December 2025 as an on-air host for sports and live events, with credits ranging from free climber Alex Honnold’s ascent of a skyscraper to MLB Opening Night and the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano boxing showcase.
