​The Brooklyn Nets placed third on Bleacher Report’s “Worst Futures” list over the next three seasons despite adding veterans this offseason and having a deep trade arsenal.Brooklyn used to have it all several years ago with a star-studded trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden. Durant said it was the best team he ever played on, but injuries and COVID-19 brought it to a premature end.Since trading Durant, Irving and Harden, the Nets have missed the playoffs in three of the last four seasons. They have tanked for top picks to accelerate a rebuild, but luck has not gone their way.In back-to-back years, the team has fallen out of the top four despite favorable odds. Brooklyn drafted Egor Dëmin eighth overall last year and Mikel Brown Jr. sixth overall this year.An unlucky streak has plagued the franchise, but their future isn’t as the third-place ranking Bleacher Report gave them.General manager Sean Marks has an abundance of first- and second-round picks, trading coveted role players at the right time rather than overvaluing them. Marks could use those picks to go star hunting, which he attempted to do when the Boston Celtics were listening to offers on Jaylen Brown.Boston reportedly wanted at least four first-round picks in any deal. That asking price wasn’t hard for Brooklyn to match, but according to The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, Brooklyn called off a potential deal.Marks has shown his interest in parting with picks for star talent, and it’s the same mentality he should have if he chooses to become a buyer during next season’s trade deadline.He can strengthen the Nets foundation he created this offseason. Marks traded for Julius Randle from the Minnesota Timberwolves and signed Keon Ellis and Moritz Wagner to two-year deals.Randle, Ellis and Wagner bring experience to a young roster. They can raise the team’s floor, which is sorely needed after a 20-62 finish last season.Randle is taking on a leadership role in his return to New York, Ellis slots into the lineup as a 3-and-D guard, and Wagner gives Brooklyn a backup center after sending Nicolas Claxton to the Chicago Bulls.Coach Jordi Fernández is excited to coach the new acquisitions, including Ellis, whom he coached as the associate head coach of the Sacramento Kings from 2022 to 2024. He has the roster to compete this season and doesn’t have to experiment with young players.Brooklyn’s future isn’t bleak, as they have the assets to turn it around quickly and reclaim the star power it once had.
