​The New Orleans Pelicans have made another move, this time signing guard Kobe Bufkin to a contract on Saturday, per NBA insider Michael Scotto. Will Guillory of The Athletic clarified that it was a training camp deal, and he would be competing for the final spot on the roster.Bufkin is a former first-round pick who was waiting in the wings for his next NBA opportunity. He hasn’t had much room to worth with in the league, perhaps this situation will be what needs to thrive at this level.The 22-year-old two-guard has averaged 4.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game on 10.2 minutes a night over his first three seasons. He’s never played more than 17 games in a single campaign, though, so it’s a small sample size. Going back to his college days, his sophomore season that got him drafted, he put up 14 points a night for the Michigan Wolverines on 48.2/35.5/84.9 shooting splits.The scoring potential is there. The Pelicans saw it firsthand during the Summer League when Bufkin dropped 30 points in their first game. He never exploded like that again, but one showing was good enough. They didn’t even play him in the final.So Bufkin will stick around for now and compete for that final roster spot throughout camp. He also has a great chance to make the team if New Orleans is able to actually trade Jordan Hawkins, which has also been high on their priority list this offseason.
