New Panthers WR may have special advantage during training camp competition

Some time may have elapsed, but the bond between Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and wide receiver John Metchie III remains evident. Kassidy Hill of Panthers.com explored their relationship in a fresh piece published Friday, highlighting the pair who shared the field at the University of Alabama in 2020 and 2021. This offseason, the two have been brought back together in Carolina, as the Panthers signed the 25-year-old receiver to a one-year contract in March.
Although they hadn’t shared a sideline since their Crimson Tide days, Young and Metchie appear to be in sync again during spring workouts. “They’re fun to watch,” Panthers wide receiver David Moore commented on Hill’s piece. “Once the receiver and the QB get that connection, that connection can’t be broken. It doesn’t matter if you’ve played with him for three years, two years, and then don’t see him again for a while; that’s his case. Once you get the timing with that QB, he doesn’t slack off, and you don’t slack off, and you keep doing it, then you’ll get back together, and it’ll be like clockwork.”
Back in 2021, Metchie served as Young’s primary target during the Heisman Trophy-winning season. He finished with a team-leading 92 receptions for 1,142 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. That standout performance is part of what makes the pairing so intriguing to Panthers observers, even as Metchie enters a different chapter of his career.
For Metchie, this marks his fourth stop in the NFL. The 2022 second-round pick previously spent time with the Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Jets. Now with the Panthers, he faces the challenge of earning a substantial role in a wide receiver room that also includes Moore, Jimmy Horn Jr., Brycen Tremayne, and Dan Chisena. The competition is stiff, and the stakes are clear: Metchie will need to show he can translate that Alabama-era chemistry with Young into productive on-field performance in Carolina.
Beyond the numbers, there is strategic value in having a player with preexisting rapport with the quarterback. If Metchie can rekindle the timing and consistency he demonstrated in college, the Panthers could benefit from an in-house familiarity that other teams may lack. That dynamic could accelerate the learning curve for Young as he acclimates to the professional level and to new teammates, while also giving Metchie a clearer path to carving out a meaningful role in the offense.
As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on how quickly Young and Metchie reconcile their collegiate connection with the rhythm of the NFL game. If their spring sessions are any indication, the potential for a productive partnership remains promising.
