A new report appears to quash the ongoing chatter about LeBron James bringing his talents to the Golden State Warriors this summer. Late last month, the moment many had predicted arrived when James informed the Los Angeles Lakers he would not return for a ninth season in 2026-27. The disclosure instantly sparked speculation about where the 22-time All-Star might end up, with many assuming the finale of his NBA career could unfold elsewhere.
Even before James announced his intent to explore other options, the Warriors were frequently viewed as a strong favorite to land him. He has long been friendly with Golden State icons Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and he holds head coach Steve Kerr in high regard. Yet, as days go by, recent reports have revived the emphasis on James’ former teams, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat, as the leading contenders. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst contributed to that narrative with a telling update during a conversation with Yahoo Sports.
“LeBron will have to decide how much he cares about what people will think if he goes to a team he’s never played for before. Basically, if he chooses somebody besides CLE or MIA. CLE or MIA, it’s a very clean decision. It makes sense. Both of them have cases. Does he want to deal with what the reaction will be if he went to Philadelphia, Minnesota, or Denver? Also deal with people calling him a ring chaser. I think that’s an extra layer.” – Brian Windhorst
The veteran NBA insider also noted that Cleveland and Miami “are in their own category,” underscoring that, even now, James still references Heat mantras and feels that Miami remains a part of his basketball DNA. All of this presents troubling news for Golden State and for fans who hoped James would join the franchise to form a veteran-led super-team in 2026-27.
An additional intriguing facet of the scenario is the reports that James plans to document what could be his final season in the league. That project might be more fitting if it unfolds with two franchises with which he has a long history, offering a narrative arc that aligns with the chapters of his career.
