​The New York Giants have a few intriguing position battles to monitor during training camp, and perhaps one of the most competitive is at left guard.Jon Runyan Jr. is the favorite to win the job, as he is entering the third and final season of a three-year, $30 million contract he signed with the Giants in March 2024.However, he is not guaranteed to start … or even be on the roster.Runyan has been a significant disappointment over his first couple of seasons, and New Yok would stand to save $9.25 million if it cuts him this summer.The competition around him is not exactly strong, however.John Harbaugh decided to bring in former Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Daniel Faalele to challenge Runyan for the job, and Faalele didn’t exactly have a great run during his first stint with Harbaugh.But at 6-foot-8, 370 pounds, Faalele brings the gargantuan frame that Harbaugh tends to favor, and he has familiarity with the former fourth-round pick.New York Giants offensive lineman Jon Runyan Jr. Credit: Lucas Boland-USA TODAY Sports.In fact, Ed Valentine of Big Blue View has gone as far to label Faalele as a lock to make the roster while placing Runyan on the bubble.While I do believe that Faalele will make the team, I personally do not view him as a “lock” to make it over Runyan.Neither player is all that inspiring, but I do believe that Runyan currently has the edge over Faalele, who actually has lowlight reels on YouTube.I think the more interesting scenario would consist of Marcus Mbow moving inside to left guard and rookie J.C. Davis then taking Mbow’s place as the Giants’ swing tackle.Mbow made a few starts on the outside during his rookie campaign last year, but he did play some guard at Purdue, so he is certainly capable of it.Or, perhaps New York would consider switching Davis to guard, handing him the starting job and keeping Mbow as the swing tackle.Whatever the case may be, there is no doubt that Harbaugh will be watching the left guard competition closely in camp.At this point, Runyan is still the favorite, and he probably will end up winning the job regardless of the rampant speculation that he could get cut.Would it be a complete shock if he were released? No, but I just don’t see how Faalele can be tabbed as a “lock” in any capacity.
