Feisty referees were a Week 4 storyline in the NFL.A seemingly innocuous first-quarter play in the Dolphins-Vikings game turned awkward when head referee Adrian Hill was knocked to the ground — and appeared to have an outsized reaction to it.The Dolphins were facing a third-and-10 play at their 33-yard line, when the Vikings’ Dallas Turner jumped offsides and the play was blown dead. The problem was that Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson and Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon did not appear to hear the whistle. They were engaged, with Gordon blocking Wilson into Hill, knocking the referee to the turf — and if anything, it appeared as if Gordon was the one responsible for the spill.Wilson offered Hill a hand. The referee wanted no part of it.The NFL also said it is reviewing this play, at least the second today involving an interaction between a player and an official. https://t.co/RM0pZMuwMj— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 5, 2026Down judge Danny Short separated Wilson and Hill and probably saved this from being a more momentous story than it was. Still, it’s unusual to see an NFL referee get in a player’s face like this. Incidental contact between players and refs happens every week. It felt like an overreaction from Hill. And as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, the league is looking into the matter. The NFL is also reportedly reviewing the Cardinals-Giants game in which an official appeared to curse at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. There was no penalty or ejection for Wilson and no further incident. The Vikings hung on to beat the Dolphins, 15-10.
