FOX Sports commentator Nick Wright doesn’t believe offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels deserves as much of the credit that he’s been getting for the New England Patriots’ success.
In a recent episode of First Things First, Wright reminded everyone that Charlie Weis, not McDaniels, was the Patriots’ offensive coordinator for the first three Super Bowls. He even went as far as saying McDaniels wouldn’t be included on his list of top five offensive minds in the NFL.
“Josh was there as the offensive coordinator [when the Patriots] lost the Super Bowl to the [New York] Giants, and he had to really piece it together with Tom Brady and Randy Moss,” said Wright. “…I think he’s an excellent offensive coordinator. He also then came back after not working as a head coach and got 12 years into his career, that mind of Tom Brady, and then Brady reached heights he hadn’t reached before.
“I’m not taking anything away from what I think is fair credit to Josh McDaniels, but this idea that he has this magical pixie dust, that he can just sprinkle on Drake Maye on this stuff—I don’t think if we are ranking offensive minds in the league, he’s not one of my top five. Now, it’s because almost all of the other guys who are ahead of him are head coaches. …There’s a lot of McDaniels was there with Brady, therefore he’s there with Maye that I just don’t fully buy.”
Ouch.
It’s tough comparing the relationship between McDaniels and Brady because Brady was the greatest quarterback in NFL history. However, Mac Jones was a Pro Bowler under McDaniels during his rookie season in 2021, and the Patriots’ offense fell off a cliff after McDaniels left for the head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Jones turned into a shell of himself under center and ended up getting benched for Bailey Zappe before he was ultimately traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Maye showed promise in Year 1 as a rookie, but his career truly took off under McDaniels. In Year 2, Maye looked like a completely different quarterback under center. He helped carry the Patriots to the Super Bowl, while also finishing second behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford in MVP voting.
Most would consider McDaniels a Hall of Fame-worthy offensive coordinator, but Wright wouldn’t be one of those individuals.
“I don’t think he will be,” Wright responded bluntly to McDaniels being a Hall of Famer.
