Nnamdi Madubuike continues trending toward a Ravens return

The Baltimore Ravens still cannot provide a definitive answer about Nnamdi Madubuike’s playing future, but general manager Eric DeCosta continues to see reasons for optimism.DeCosta said Madubuike is trending in the right direction following neck surgery and indicated that Baltimore expects to know more about the Pro Bowl defensive tackle’s status within the next few weeks.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe update stops short of confirming that Madubuike will be medically cleared to return during the 2026 season. It does, however, continue a series of encouraging developments surrounding one of the most important players on Baltimore’s defense.Madubuike underwent surgery in April to address the neck injury that ended his 2025 season. ESPN reported at the time that his doctors believed he could resume playing in 2026, although no final determination had been made.Head coach Jesse Minter offered a similarly positive assessment during the Ravens’ offseason program, saying Madubuike had been spending significant time at the facility and was progressing well through the rehabilitation process.DeCosta’s comments reinforce that trajectory while establishing a potential window for additional clarity.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementMadubuike’s neck injury created uncertainty far beyond a single position on Baltimore’s depth chart. The veteran defensive tackle had played in 55 consecutive games before suffering the injury during a Sept. 14 victory over the Cleveland Browns. He was subsequently placed on injured reserve and missed the remainder of the season, leaving the Ravens without their most dangerous interior pass rusher. His absence was particularly significant because few NFL defensive tackles can create pressure with Madubuike’s consistency. Madubuike recorded a career-high 13 sacks in 2023, leading all NFL defensive tackles and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. His emergence gave Baltimore the interior disruption necessary to prevent quarterbacks from comfortably stepping forward when pressure arrived from the edge.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHe had accumulated 21.5 sacks from the beginning of the 2023 season through his injury, the highest total among NFL defensive tackles over that period. Madubuike also recorded two sacks during Baltimore’s first two games of 2025 before the neck issue ended his season. That production prompted the Ravens to sign him to a four-year, $98 million extension before the 2024 season, identifying him as one of the foundational players around whom the defense would be constructed. His potential return would strengthen a front that already features established interior defenders Travis Jones and John Jenkins. Baltimore also added considerable pass-rushing talent around the defensive line, giving Minter and defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver the pieces to create a more aggressive and disruptive unit.None of those additions, however, completely replaces what Madubuike provides
