​PITTSBURG, KS. — The No. 10 Pitt State Gorillas opened up MIAA play at home to Emporia State, falling 21-10 and sit 0-2 on the season. It was a slow start for both teams on offense, but Emporia State found its spark first. Quarterback Ben Harris handed the ball off to Camden Crooks and he was in the endzone for the first score of the game.The Gorillas couldn’t get things going offensively, but the Hornets struck again minutes later. Harris found Trenden Collins for the touchdown, making thing 14-0.After this play is when the switch flipped for Pitt State. Quarterback Jake Wolff found T.J. Starks down the field for the 57-yard pass completion. Starks had 102 receiving yards in this game.Then plays later, the hosts found their spark on offense. Wolff handed the ball off to true freshman running back Syre Padilla for Pitt State’s first and only touchdown of the game with just 17 seconds left in the first quarter.Early on, the Gorillas went to work on defense with solid plays against the Hornets. Early in the second quarter, Aabiyas Wakes intercepted Emporia State’s pass.However, the Hornets were able to keep things going on offense in the second quarter, scoring another touchdown and making things 21-7 at the end of the first half.After halftime, neither teams could do anything on offense in the third quarter, but Pitt State had a successful field goal in the fourth quarter, making things 21-10. However, Emporia State’s defense was able to hold off the Gorillas with a couple of plays including an interception with 2:44 left in the game, securing the victory over Pitt State.PSU football will be on the road for its next game against West Alabama on Saturday, September 12 at noon.Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
