​Sep. 26—FREMONT, Neb. — In a battle of the last two undefeated football teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, it was all Midland University on Saturday afternoon over for the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers.No. 18 Midland rattled off 612 yards of offense and held the Tigers to 1 yard of rushing in a 49-0 shutout at Heedum Field. Midland (5-0, 4-0 GPAC) now has sole possession of first place in the conference.The Tigers (3-2, 3-1 GPAC) could not get anything going against the Midland defense, which is allowing less than 9 points per game to GPAC foes. DWU finished with a season-low 160 yards of offense and 10 first downs, which included only 42 yards in the first half.On defense, DWU couldn’t get Midland quarterback Brodey Johnson on the ground, and Johnson picked apart the Tigers’ pass defense for 234 yards in the first half. Johnson finished 21-for-31 passing for 306 yards and four touchdowns. The Warriors also had their dynamic duo of receivers going, with T.J. Covington catching seven passes for 144 yards and reigning NAIA player of the week Jurrion Dickey catching six passes for 101 yards, with both catching two touchdowns. The Warriors were 7-for-11 on third down and 2-for-3 on fourth downs.DWU’s best scoring chance came early in the second quarter, when the Tigers got the ball at the Midland 35-yard-line off a poor Warriors punt. Trailing 7-0, DWU moved the ball 11 yards and the 41-yard field goal attempt was blocked. The teams traded possessions and Midland then hit a big play when Brodey Johnson hit T.J. Covington on a slant through the heart of the Tiger defense for a 53-yard touchdown to go up 14-0. After another DWU 3-and-out, Midland extended the lead when Fred Hunter busted open a 4th-and-1 run off the left side and scampered 34 yards for a touchdown to take a 21-0 lead.Midland added to the lead before halftime when Johnson hit up Dickey again for a 9-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left before intermission, making it 28-0 at the break.DWU did not reach the red zone until the fourth quarter, and the Tigers’ 8-play, 57-yard drive ended with an interception when Luke Carritt stepped in front of a Jed Jenson pass at the 5-yard line.DWU’s rushing game was held to one yard on 26 carries, which included five Midland sacks for minus-21 yards. Landon Iverson rushed 10 times for 11 yards in the DWU backfield.The Warriors finished with 27 first downs, and rushed 37 times for 282 yards, a clip of 7.5 yards per carry.
