Linebacker Kaimana Sione sacked quarterback Lucky Suguturaga on the final play of the game as No. 3 Kapolei escaped with a 20-14 win over No. 4 Kahuku on a muggy Saturday night at the Hurricanes’ field. The ball was at the Kapolei 20-yard line with 15 seconds left after a ’Canes time out. That’s when Sione came up with the clutch play.“We called our play and two linebackers blitz. I saw a wide-open gap and I just went,” Sione said. “I turned around and there were 0.8 seconds, and I ran back.”The controversy that followed involved Suguturaga’s spike. There were 3.2 seconds left when Kahuku snapped the ball, and eight-tenths of a second on the clock after the spike. Kahuku coach David Stant was told that a spike in 3.2 seconds was not possible, and officials called the game over.“They said there’s no such thing as 0.8 seconds. I have no idea what that means,” Stant said. “Once it gets under three seconds, it’s impossible to spike the ball. It’s a rule. That’s what I was told. It is what it is. It’s not the ref’s fault. We played horrible on offense. We’ve got to find out how we can be better.”Kapolei improved to 4-1 in the OIA Open Division (6-1 overall), while Kahuku slipped to 1-2 (4-4 overall). The Hurricanes have a bug of some kind that has hit a number of players.“I feel good. I’m surprised. I wasn’t really feeling it today,” Sione said. “Kind of sick, but we came out at the end and I did it for my team.”It was a defensive battle most of the night, but an early error by the visiting team was key. After a fake punt by Kahuku was snuffed out, Kapolei needed just four plays to reach pay dirt. On fourth-and-1 in their jumbo set, Chazz-Michael Kapahu went under center. The tush-push got him the first down, and he found daylight for a 25-yard touchdown run. The Hurricanes led 7-0 with 9:01 left in the first half.Kapolei drove 64 yards in 13 plays in the second quarter, scoring on Kapahu’s 1-yard wildcat run. The ’Canes led 14-0 with 3:21 remaining in the first half.Kahuku’s offense woke up in time for a nine-play, 84-yard scoring march. Suguturaga stood firm in the pocket and took a big hit as he delivered a 22-yard strike to Bodhi Kaanga on a post route for the Red Raiders’ first TD with 15 seconds before halftime.By intermission, Kapolei had 117 yards of total offense. Kahuku had 102. The biggest factor was the failed fake punt that tilted field position to Kapolei.A rare Kapolei turnover set the tone in the third quarter. Jonez Nunuha lost the football on an RPO exchange with Kapahu, and Siale Reid returned the ball 34 yards to the Kapolei 25-yard line. Five plays later, Blazyn-Brave Nunuha raced past defenders and dove inside the left pylon for a 5-yard TD, tying the game at 14 with 7:32 left in the third quarter. The Hurricanes responded with a balanced attack, mixing short passes by Nunuha with jumbo package keepers by Kapahu. The 17-play, 78-yard drive ended with a 2-yard TD pass from Nun
