   # “No One Is Infallible”: Patriots Owner Robert Kraft Backs Mike Vrabel Amid Dianna Russini Controversy
Mike Vrabel’s first season as head coach of the New England Patriots delivered one of the most dramatic turnarounds the NFL has seen in recent years. After the Patriots stumbled to a 4-13 finish under Jerod Mayo, Vrabel arrived and quickly changed the direction of the franchise. New England surged to a 14-3 record, captured the AFC East title, and earned a trip to Super Bowl 60. Quarterback Drake Maye also took a major leap forward, emerging as a legitimate MVP candidate and giving the organization renewed confidence about its long-term future.
However, the Patriots’ impressive success on the field has not been the only major storyline surrounding the team. Much of the offseason attention has centered on questions involving Vrabel and former NFL insider Dianna Russini. The controversy became one of the league’s most discussed off-field stories and sparked speculation about whether it could affect Vrabel’s standing inside the Patriots organization.
The situation began after Page Six published photos that reportedly showed Vrabel and Russini together at the Ambiente luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona, on April 7. The images appeared to show the two holding hands and embracing at the adults-only resort, quickly fueling public discussion across NFL media circles. Shortly after, The Athletic reportedly opened an internal review into whether Russini’s alleged relationship with Vrabel created any conflict of interest or compromised her NFL reporting.
Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14, adding more attention to the story. The situation grew further when additional photos surfaced that appeared to show Vrabel and Russini together at a New York City bar in 2020. At that time, Vrabel was still the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, while Russini was working for ESPN.
The controversy even appeared to intersect with Vrabel’s professional schedule. He reportedly missed the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft to attend counseling. Despite the public scrutiny and the headlines surrounding the matter, the Patriots remained supportive of their head coach. With training camp approaching, team owner Robert Kraft addressed the issue publicly during an appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” making it clear that the organization still believes in Vrabel.
“We’re privileged to have Mike as our head coach,” Kraft said. “No one is infallible. What’s great about Mike is he has great intellectual knowledge about football — all the technical skills — and he relates to the players beautifully. He’s someone I have a strong belief and faith in. I hope he’s going to be our head coach for many years to come.”
Kraft’s comments were significant because they provided the strongest public indication yet that the Patriots do not intend to let the controversy define Vrabel’s tenure. Instead, the franchise appears focused on maintaining stability after a season in which New England reestablished itself as one of the AFC’s top teams.
Inside the locker room, there has been little indication that the outside noise has damaged Vrabel’s relationship with his players. His leadership style, football knowledge, and ability to connect with the roster were major reasons the Patriots improved so quickly last season. Maye’s development, in particular, reflected the impact of a coaching staff that helped create a more effective and confident offensive environment.
Still, the Patriots will face a much more difficult challenge in the upcoming season. Their schedule includes nine games against teams that made the playoffs last year, beginning with a Super Bowl 60 rematch against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. New England’s 29-13 loss to Seattle in the championship game remains fresh, and the opener will immediately test whether the Patriots can respond to that disappointment.
The road will not get much easier after that. Even some of the non-playoff teams on New England’s schedule present serious challenges. Matchups against the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions could all carry major implications, as each team has enough talent to compete deep into the postseason. For a Patriots team trying to prove last season was not a one-year surge, consistency will be essential.
As training camp gets underway, Vrabel’s ability to refocus the team on football will be one of the most important storylines in New England. The Patriots have the quarterback, coaching structure, and roster foundation to remain in contention, but they will also need to show they can handle outside distractions and increased expectations.
Kraft’s message was clear: the Patriots are standing by Mike Vrabel. Now, the next step is proving that the organization’s belief in him is justified. If Vrabel, Maye, and the rest of the roster can use last season’s Super Bowl loss as motivation rather than a ceiling, New England could once again be one of the NFL’s most dangerous teams.
