Northern Ireland remain top of Group 2 after goalless draw with GeorgiaNorthern Ireland remain top of Group 2 in the Nations League B but missed out on a chance to win after a late penalty save.Goals have been at a premium in Group 2 so far but Michael O’Neill’s team have remained resolute and the back and have not conceded a single goal in this extended break. The Northern Irish defence was resolute once again in Belfast and did well to contain Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.Things could have been even better had one of the two golden chances been converted late on.The first of those came in the 80th minute as Northern Ireland pressed high up with Shea Charles winning the ball from the Georgian defender which fell kindly into the path of Stevenage’s Josh Magennis with only the goalkeeper to beat. However, Magennis’s effort was kept out thanks to a strong hand by Giorgi Mamardashvili for a corner. From the resulting corner, Georgia cleared but VAR sent the referee to the screen where he penalised Nodar Lominadze for a foul as the midfielder attempted to clear the ball but only succeeded in kicking Ruairi McConville in the head. After netting against Ukraine last time out, Isaac Price stepped up but his penalty low to the left wasn’t powerful enough and Liverpool man Mamardashvili once again showed his ability by keeping it out.Northern Ireland didn’t manage to have that kind of opportunity again and will be hoping they don’t rue those missed points for the two crucial games against Ukraine and Hungary in November.
