However, the 41-year-old’s interest in playing in LA waned over time and he ultimately decided to leave as a free agent.James’ agent revealed on Wednesday that, after a while, the four-time NBA champion decided not to return to the Lakers.“As time went on, he thought about things more. It went down and down. Once he got to a place where he said, ‘I understand where things are. I know that’s where I could probably make the most money, but where I’m at today, it’s probably not the best thing for me to do.’ I said, ‘Are you 100% sure?’ And he said, ‘Yes, I’m 100% sure that’s not a place I would want to return,” Paul said on the “Game Over” podcast.Paul also spoke about the “happiness” aspect of the decision and revealed that the Lakers were keen to bring James back for the 2026/27 season.“It just got to a place that where LeBron was like, there didn’t really need to be a meeting… They wanted to bring him back, obviously, but there didn’t need to be [an offer], and I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time,” he added. It remains to be seen where James will play next season, with the Golden State Warriors reportedly leading the race for his signature. Possible returns to the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers have also been mentioned as James chases a fifth NBA championship.MORE: ‘He Wore a Lakers Uniform, but He Wasn’t a Laker’ – Los Angeles Radio Host Blasts LeBron James on the Way out the DoorPaul also revealed that he has spoken with “12 to 14 teams” and made it clear that neither the money nor the market size of the team mattered to James when choosing his next destination.James showed last season that he is still very much capable of playing at the top level.
