The Los Angeles Lakers are prioritizing building a championship-ready roster around Luka Dončić for next season, with Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren emerging as a potential key addition due to his athleticism and upside at age 22. According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Duren is expected to explore sign-and-trade options once free agency opens on June 30. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn named the Lakers as a prominent potential destination, suggesting that pairing Duren with Dončić and Austin Reaves could create formidable offensive firepower, and noting the Lakers might pursue a max offer to force Detroit’s hand in a sign-and-trade.
Duren’s path could be limited if Detroit does not cooperate, as his status is that of a restricted free agent. Amick reported Duren was disappointed by Detroit’s initial restricted free-agent offer, prompting him to consider sign-and-trade as an alternative route. Detroit, however, has indicated it has no intention of trading Duren and remains focused on a long-term deal, a stance that could be tested by the Pistons’ recent trade of Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies, potentially providing some flexibility.
Duren had a standout regular season, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 65% from the field, earning his first All-Star nod and a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. In the playoffs, his production dipped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds on 51.4% shooting. He signed a four-year rookie contract with Detroit worth about $19.5 million, with an average annual value around $4.87 million. Cap expert Yossi Gozlan noted that a cap-space team could offer him up to four years and $177 million, implying the Pistons could potentially match a lucrative deal if needed.
