Atalanta have solidified the acquisition of creative midfielder Gianluca Gaetano from Cagliari for a reported total fee of €14 million, including add-ons. The 26-year-old playmaker was singled out by new boss Maurizio Sarri to inject a broader range of characteristics into the squad, a strategic move particularly relevant as Ederson nears a transfer to Manchester United.
An agreement was reached this week for a package reported at €12 million plus up to €2 million in performance-related bonuses. Gaetano completed medical examinations in the past 24 hours and has now been officially unveiled as a new Atalanta player. A product of the Napoli youth academy, Gaetano’s career path has been characterized by limited playing time with his hometown club, followed by loan spells at Cremonese and Cagliari. Cagliari exercised their option to purchase him outright last summer for €6.2 million, only to see his value more than double within a year.
Gaetano brings a substantial Serie A resume to Atalanta, appearing 93 times in Italy’s top flight, during which he has netted 10 goals and contributed 11 assists. His experience also includes five appearances in the Champions League, underscoring his adaptability at the highest level of European football.
With Gaetano joining, Atalanta, known as La Dea, are reinforcing their midfield options ahead of the upcoming campaign. The club’s ambitions under Sarri include enhancing creativity, tempo, and transition play, ensuring they remain competitive both in Serie A and in European competitions. This strategic addition aligns with Atalanta’s broader objective of developing versatile attackers who can operate in multiple roles across the midfield and attacking trios.
As part of their season preparation, La Dea commenced pre-season training in Bergamo today, under the guidance of their new head coach. The arrival of Gaetano is expected to provide Sarri with additional options to implement his tactical philosophy, including ball progression, spatial awareness, and link-up play between the midfield and forward lines.
Gaetano’s career trajectory reflects a player who has proven his ability to perform in Italy’s top leagues, with the potential to grow further under Sarri’s guidance. For Atalanta fans and observers, the signing signals a deliberate move to diversify their creative resources in midfield, offering fresh dynamics in possession phases, pressing scenarios, and attacking rotations. As Gaetano integrates into the squad, attention will turn to how he fits into Sarri’s system, how he collaborates with teammates, and how his performance translates into meaningful contributions in both domestic competitions and continental fixtures.
