Ole Miss Rebels just missed out on an elite player they could have definitely used in their 2027 recruiting class

The Ole Miss Rebels propelled a solid recruiting class in the 2027 cycle, though they just missed on four-star cornerback Raheem Floyd, who ultimately chose the Florida Gators. Floyd, a top-100 recruit from East St. Louis, Illinois, carries a 91.42 composite rating and sits as the No. 12 cornerback in the country and the No. 6 prospect in Illinois, according to ESPN. Rivals shows Ole Miss finishing third in Floyd’s recruitment, behind Florida and Missouri.
Floyd took a total of eight official visits, four to Missouri, two to Ole Miss, two to Wisconsin, two to Florida, and one to Illinois, before committing to the Gators. Florida’s ongoing offensive and defensive talent influx has made it unsurprising that he joined them, as the Gators continue to stack elite players and reinforce the momentum they’ve built on the trail in recent years. Floyd’s addition would have reinforced their cornerback depth and raised their already strong standing.
Even with Floyd’s departure, the Rebels remain in admirable shape. Ole Miss currently sits with the No. 14 recruiting class nationally and the No. 7 class in the SEC, featuring 14 blue-chip prospects among 21 total commitments. That framework provides a solid foundation, and the cornerback room isn’t bare by any means. The Rebels still boast four-star cornerback Tae’lynn Mayo, a 6’3” athlete who brings ideal length and upside at the position, along with three-star cornerback Mason Moore in the fold. This means Ole Miss isn’t scrambling to fill a critical need; they’ve already secured two corners, including a blue-chip prospect with tangible size and potential.
Of course, adding Floyd would have elevated the class even further, given his elite talent. But the current state of the program shows resilience and strategic planning rather than desperation. The visit dynamics help tell the full story: Missouri hosted Floyd four times, which helped build a strong relationship and typically proves decisive in recruiting battles. Florida hosted him twice and ultimately closed the deal. Ole Miss matched Florida’s visit count but couldn’t separate from the field to win Floyd’s commitment. Sometimes the numbers simply don’t tilt in your favor, and this appears to be one of those cases.
Looking ahead, the Rebels press on with a class that remains among the best in the SEC. Securing Mayo and Moore provides them with two corners to develop, ensuring the position isn’t neglected. The overall talent level across the 21-man class remains compelling, and while Floyd’s name would have added a significant boost, Ole Miss isn’t left without a plan or options to build a competitive secondary. This result reflects the realities of recruiting in a crowded landscape and underscores the importance of continuing to develop the pieces already in place.
