For those of us who live and breathe 49ers football, writing about Brandon Aiyuk used to be a privilege. He was the crisp-route running, blocking-committed, explosive cornerstone who looked like the future of Kyle Shanahan’s passing attack.Today, however, writing about him feels incredibly bittersweet. With training camp scheduled to kick off on July 25 and a massive financial deadline looming on September 1, this might very well be the last I ever write about Brandon. The story is simply running out of runway.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhat started as a thrilling All-Pro rise has degraded into a cautionary tale of historic proportions. The question of “when” Aiyuk plays again in the NFL has officially turned into an alarming, career-threatening “if”. The soon-to-be-former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver has been relatively quiet over the last few days, but that hasn’t stopped the rest of the league from speculating on his rapidly evaporating future. On a recent episode of his podcast, ESPN’s Adam Schefter dedicated a major segment to unpacking the gridlock surrounding the wideout. Most of it is what we already know. Brandon Aiyuk still needs to formally apply for league reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list, and he adamantly refuses to do so. But Schefter added a fascinating piece of context from his recent conversations with front-office executives across the league:“Does this guy even want to play?” Schefter said. “I can’t answer that. Only Brandon Aiyuk can. But I can tell you that teams have raised that question.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAiyuk has been incredibly vocal about his refusal to apply for reinstatement, publicly declaring that he will not be doing “any kind of business” with the 49ers. Unfortunately for him, the NFL rulebook does not care about his personal grievances. Until he files a simple, standard piece of paperwork with the league office, no other team can legally contact him, nor can he sign a contract elsewhere. He remains entirely under the 49ers’ roster control.Even if Aiyuk swallowed his pride tomorrow and submitted his reinstatement paperwork, his actions over the last several months have severely damaged his market value. At one point, a trade to the Washington Commanders to reunite with his former college teammate Jayden Daniels felt like an inevitability. But after a barrage of erratic social media videos where Aiyuk publicly insulted Daniels, telling him to stop “running behind your momma,” and dragged the 49ers’ front office, those doors appear to have slammed shut.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“I honestly believe that he’s scared off teams like Washington,” Schefter explained. “I think they are looking at these social media posts—repeated social media posts—where he is blasting the Niners, where he’s criticizing Jayden Daniels; they are saying, ‘Is this the kind of guy that we want to bring in right now and have as a part of
