One of golf’s biggest stars just committed to the 3M Open

The 3M Open added another major attraction this week by announcing a commitment from Jordan Spieth on Wednesday. The three-time major champion and former world No. 1 will headline the field in Blaine at the end of July, marking a long-awaited return to Minnesota’s lone PGA Tour stop. In recent years, the tournament has pursued Spieth with vigor in hopes of luring him to TPC Twin Cities, and they have finally secured a pledge from the 32-year-old Texan. Spieth’s appearance would be his first professional foray in the state since the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, a fact that adds extra significance to this year’s event.
Circumstances may have influenced Spieth’s decision. He currently sits 53rd in the FedEx Cup standings, and climbing into the top 50 after the first playoff event would guarantee a player’s entry into many of next season’s marquee, high-purse tournaments. The 3M Open serves as the third-to-last regular-season event on the schedule, which could incentivize Spieth to take his chances in Blaine if there is a potential payoff in terms of securing coveted playoff positioning.
Still, Spieth could perhaps have reached the top 50 without making his first trip to Blaine, which makes the tournament’s ability to land him a notable triumph for organizers. His current form has not matched the level he reached a decade ago; he has not posted a top-10 finish this season and has not claimed a victory since 2022. He is not yet among the five highest-ranked players committed to this year’s event. Despite that, Spieth is expected to be the second-biggest star on site in Blaine, trailing only the reigning World No. 1, Scottie Scheffler.
Spieth remains one of golf’s foremost draws thanks to his distinctive, outspoken approach to the game—characteristics that have endeared him to fans and kept him in the public eye. Local spectators will now have the chance to witness Spieth up close, providing a fresh and compelling storyline for the tournament. The 3M Open has continued to strengthen its field by adding high-profile names, and Spieth’s presence only amplifies the event’s appeal in the region.
In addition to Spieth’s announcement, recent weeks have seen other notable names committing to the 3M Open, including Hideki Matsuyama as another marquee addition to the field. The PGA Tour landscape continues to unfold with a mix of veteran figures and current stars, which bodes well for what promises to be a competitive and widely watched tournament in Blaine. As the event approaches, fans will look forward to seeing how Spieth’s dynamic game and his energetic style translate onto the TPC Twin Cities course once again.
