Otzelberger joined returner Blake Buchanan and transfer Tre Singleton to discuss a summer defined by roster turnover, administrative transition and an unwavering commitment to a what they view to be the “Cyclone identity.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNavigating a leadership transitionThe program is currently adjusting to the news of Athletic Director Jamie Pollard’s upcoming retirement.Otzelberger, who has viewed Pollard as a “tremendous mentor, role model, friend, [and] confidant” for years, spoke to the legacy being left behind.“What he’s accomplished here over time at Iowa State is remarkable,” Otzelberger said. “You can put his body of work against anybody over that period of time and I’d be confident in the excellent job that he’s done and done for Iowa State.”Buchanan, entering his second year, noted that while the newer players are still getting to know the administration, Pollard’s presence is a staple for the returners. “He gives a lot of support to this program… it’s obviously going to be sad to see him go,” Buchanan said.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDespite the change, Otzelberger signaled total alignment with President Cook, stating he has already made a “tremendous impact from a leadership standpoint right away” with a clear plan to move the university forward.The “winning” character of Christian WigginsThe season-ending injury to freshman Christian Wiggins has been a storyline of the summer. However, Otzelberger highlighted Wiggins’ response as a blueprint for the entire team.“His actions through this have really been inspiring,” Otzelberger said. “I’ve not seen anybody handle such a challenging situation so well and so selflessly… I know what winning looks like and everything about Christian Wiggins is winning”Outside of Wiggins, the roster remains in a strong position.
