Packers GM says there have been ‘discussions’ on Tucker Kraft extension

GREEN BAY – Tucker Kraft is trending not only to be back onto the field after last season’s torn ACL, but also toward a long-term extension with the Green Bay Packers.General manager Brian Gutekunst said there have been “discussions” with the star tight end regarding a potential extension. The Packers extended receivers Jayden Reed and Christian Watson in spring, and they extended defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt last week. Gutekunst indicated those were precursors to clear the path for a Kraft extension in camp.“There’s been discussions,” Gutekunst said, “and certainly I think it’s for both us and him it’s in the best interest to get something done. But these things take time. We’ve been through a bunch of extensions this summer kind of knowing this was going to be the one right about now. We have a little bit of time because it’s just not there yet, but I would expect hopefully that would get done. But you never know how that’s going to go.”Kraft opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list, but his recovery from last season’s injury has been promising. He’ll reach the nine-month mark post surgery Aug. 13, leaving a month to the team’s Sept. 13 opener at the Minnesota Vikings.“Very much a possibility,” Gutekunst said when asked if Kraft could be ready for the start of this season. “In fact, I anticipate him being out there sooner rather than later. The more work he can get with [Packers quarterback] Jordan [Love], even when he’s not ready for the team part of it, the more individual work he can get done with Jordan is going to be important with him as he heads into the season. We’ve had a lot of discussions with the timing of that, and obviously we want to be protective.“He’s coming off a major injury, and he’s still about that eight-and-a-half-month mark, but by the way he looks I think he’s ready to go. Because when you see him out there, it’s a little bit like Christian. Those guys look really, really good early, but there’s a lot of science behind that nine-month mark. So we’ll be very cautious as we head into it.”This article originally appeared on Packers News: Packers GM says there have been ‘discussions’ on Tucker Kraft extension
