Two Florida Gators alumni will be competing at the 139th Wimbledon Championships in London, which begins on Monday. Ben Shelton, who attended UF from 2020 to 2022 and is currently the ATP’s No. 5, is entering the singles draw, while Diego Hidalgo, a Gainesville alumnus from 2013 to 2016, will compete in doubles.
The men’s singles tournament starts on Monday, June 29, with doubles matching up on Wednesday, July 1. Shelton will be making his fourth Wimbledon appearance and his first as a No. 4 seed, carrying an 8-3 career record at the All England Club. The Gainesville native reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year and has secured at least one win in each of his three prior Wimbledon appearances (2023–2025), advancing further each time. In the opening round on Tuesday, June 30 at 7:10 a.m. ET on Court 2, Shelton will face Otto Virtanen of Finland, who is unseeded and ranked No. 140. This season, Shelton has gone 25-10 in singles, with titles at the Boss Open, BMW Open, and Nexo Dallas Open.
Hidalgo is making his third doubles appearance at Wimbledon, and his first since 2024, when he teamed with Chilean player Alejandro Tabilo and fell in the Round of 64. The Guayaquil, Ecuador native’s best Wimbledon finish came in 2022 when he reached the Round of 32 alongside Colombian partner Cristian Rodríguez. This year Hidalgo teams up with Matej Vocel of the Czech Republic, and the pair will open against the No. 11 seeds Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler, who represent Portugal and Austria, respectively.
