The FIFA World Cup, held every four years, typically spawns a surge of exclusive merchandise, most notably the Panini sticker album, which features stickers for many of the 1,248 players across the 48 squads competing in the 2026 tournament.
The Panini sticker album has become one of the most popular World Cup collectibles worldwide. Fans from all corners of the globe aim to complete their albums by securing stickers for every player at the tournament. The Sporting News explores why the album has turned into such a celebrated and exciting collecting phenomenon, and provides guidance on how to start your own collection.
Since 1970, Panini has produced officially licensed sticker booklets for every FIFA World Cup, with the exception of 1994 when Upper Deck held the rights. The inaugural album featured 270 stickers, each representing a player prominently displayed at the competition. Since then, the sticker collection has grown into a true collecting phenomenon, captivating soccer enthusiasts and hobbyists alike every four years as the product is released.
Completing an album—gathering all stickers and filling every page—has long been a badge of honor for collectors. Yet the task has become more challenging as the album expands. For the 2026 edition, a staggering 980 unique stickers are needed to complete the booklet from front to back.
The culture surrounding sticker trading and swapping is deeply rooted, a dynamic that predated Panini America’s entry as a subsidiary by more than a decade. Jason Howarth, Panini America’s senior vice president of marketing and athlete relations, told The Sporting News that the strong, diverse trading community in the United States, comprised of people from all over the world, has helped shape the swap culture and keep it thriving.
While most collectors aim to obtain one of every sticker to complete the set, there are also varying rarities to cater to more dedicated or niche collectors. In the United States, each sticker’s border color signals its rarity: White for Common (found in every pack), Blue for Uncommon (about one in every two packs), Red for Rare (about one in every 25 packs), Purple for Very Rare (about one in every 200 packs), Green for Super Rare (about one in every 1,400 packs), and Black for 1-of-1, representing the unique, one-of-one sticker for each player. The black-bordered stickers are the rarest, with only a single copy of each player in existence. These highly sought-after stickers can fetch thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on resale platforms, underscoring the high stakes and excitement that surround top-tier players in the Panini World Cup lineup.
