Cam Newton’s potential election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is poised to spark thoughtful debate for years to come. Yet, according to several people who know him well, there isn’t much doubt about his place in the conversation. In a recent piece from The Charlotte Observer, Scott Fowler offered two influential perspectives on Newton, who will first become eligible for immortality in 2027. Fowler starts with Newton’s first NFL head coach, Ron Rivera, who, according to Fowler, raised Newton’s case without prompting during a separate feature.
“Seven seasons, before he hurt his shoulder, Cam Newton was at the top of the NFL,” Rivera said, via Fowler. “There’s got to be serious consideration for the Hall of Fame. And I mean that, because that guy redefined the position.” Newton’s impact on the game extended beyond his remarkable early career. For most of his time in the league, he held the record for the most career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, with 75, a mark that underscored his dual-threat prowess. Rivera emphasized that Newton’s style helped reshape the quarterback prototype in the modern era, a transformation evident in the next generation of players who followed in his wake, including Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Drake Maye, and, notably, Josh Allen, who eventually surpassed Newton’s rushing touchdown record.
Fowler then turned to Luke Kuechly, a Panthers legend and longtime teammate, who recently secured his own place in Canton earlier this year. “That one guy changed how people defended the quarterback,” Kuechly said. “When he was rolling, he was the best player on the field at all times. I know he won MVP, was a Pro Bowler, and all that, but think about this: whenever he was on the field, he was the biggest, most physical, and best player on it.”
Newton, Rivera, and Kuechly formed the core of what many fans and analysts consider the golden era of Panthers football. The trio helped guide Carolina to three consecutive NFC South titles from 2013 through 2015, a period defined by their run to the franchise’s second Super Bowl appearance. During that era, Newton earned the franchise’s only Most Valuable Player award and Offensive Player of the Year honors. Across his 11-year NFL career, he also captured an Offensive Rookie of the Year award, earned a first-team All-Pro selection, and received three Pro Bowl invitations.
