​Panthers Made Coaching Twist During Cardinals’ GameThe Carolina Panthers had their first dress rehearsal before the regular season when they travelled to play the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Thursday night. The Panthers had their first opportunity to hit players with another team’s logo on their helmet since training camp began in August. It was also an opportunity for rookies like Haynes King to get his first opportunity to play in the NFL, and he shined in the moment.Carolina made an interesting coaching twist in its first preseason game. Panthers defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley called plays on the defense instead of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. Cooley has called plays in the preseason before for the Panthers.Following the game, Panthers head coach Dave Canales praised Cooley and Idzik for their playcalling in the 33-30 win over the Cardinals.”So really proud of the group, you know… Jonathan Cooley called the game on the defensive side today, and it was a fantastic operation, getting the calls in appropriate calls at the right time, really pleased with the rhythm that he had,” Canales said, via the Panthers.”And then (offensive coordinator) Brad (Idzik), same thing on the offensive side, getting the calls in early so the guys could be organized. And just a big shout out to all the coaches… So really proud of the group and the way that they played our play style today.”In February, Canales revealed that he would be turning playcalling duties over to Idzik for the upcoming season.Canales was impressed with the way Idzik was able to handle his duties late in the game with many new faces on the roster.”Brad knew it, and that kind of is why the nature of some of the calls came out at the end there, because we knew we had an extra down to play with,” Canales said of the final drive. “The great challenge is just like knowing which group you have in and how you can utilize different players. “And so you know, tip my hat to Brad, just being able to say who’s my back, you know, what can we do with this guy? Which wideouts do I have in there? Really, that’s the challenge of trying to go through a preseason is to work with a different group of guys.”The Panthers will have three more preseason games to clean things up before starting the regular season at home against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 13. Those three games will help Idzik prepare to call plays when the wins and losses start counting.
