”One step forward, two steps back” seems to be the best the Carolina Panthers can do right now. Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals served as a coming out party for rookie quarterback Haynes King, who led the team to a thrilling 33-30 win as time expired.Unfortunately, shortly after, we learned that King suffered a hamstring injury during the game—and is now considered “week-to-week” by the organization. In the meantime, they have signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-round pick Kyle Trask to serve as their third quarterback. But if you’re looking for signs of hope amid all the depressing injury news coming out of camp, you can rest easy knowing starter Bryce Young is having what one beat reporter calls his best training camp yet. Here’s what Young had to say about his progress after Sunday’s practice, per Joe Person at The Athletic:”I try to feed off the people around me. All of us are pushing each other, wanting to be at our best… I’m not a big sit back, reflect, compare (person). Doesn’t really do anything for me. So I don’t think about the past like that… I’m happy with the camp we’re having so far. I’m happy with the growth as a unit. But it’s still early. We’ve got a lot more to do.”To observers such as an anonymous coach, as noted by Person, Young looks to be more confident and more in command. This is good news, especially in light of the slow starts that the 2023 No. 1 overall pick has had in each of his first three seasons in the NFL.As a rookie, he didn’t post more than 204 passing yards until Week 4. And in 2024, he was shockingly benched after two atrocious starts. And in 2025, albeit a career campaign thus far, he didn’t produce at a high level consistently enough. If Young can hit the ground running this time, it will give the Panthers a much better chance to weather the storm when the brutal portion of their schedule begins in Week 4—with the Detroit Lions. If he can’t, Carolina risks falling out of playoff contention by Week 10, when they emerge from that difficult stretch of the schedule. It was already true before their injuries started mounting—but now, more than ever, the Panthers are going to go as far as Young’s improvement can carry them.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers QB Bryce Young comments on his best training camp so far
