Patriots playoff picture: How Week 7 impacts AFC standings

By admin — In News — October 27, 2026

Their 30-24 loss to the Chicago Bears last Thursday put an end to the New England Patriots’ three-game winning streak, and also impacts their standing in the AFC playoff picture. Entering Week 7 as the fifth seed in the conference, they woke up on Friday morning out of the playoff picture and having dropped all the way to No. 9.Of course, a majority of Week 7 was still left to be played at that point. With those games now all in the books, let’s update the standings.AFC East standingsBuffalo Bills (5-1)New England Patriots (4-2)New York Jets (2-5)Miami Dolphins (1-5)The Patriots remain in second place in their division even after losing to the Bears, and would have stayed put regardless of what the weekend slate would have brought. The Bills, after all, were on a bye, meaning New England would not have overtaken them even in case of a win. That said, what was a one-game deficit entering Thursday is now a 1.5-game gap that needs to be overcome.Elsewhere in the division, the Dolphins celebrated their first win of the year. After looking like arguably the worst team in the NFL, they beat the Jets 28-25 on the road to improve to 1-5 on the year — a likely morale boost heading into this week’s home game with the Patriots. The Jets, meanwhile, are now 0-2 in the division and in real danger of their season slipping away already.AFC playoff standingsKansas City Chiefs (5-1)Buffalo Bills (5-1)Cleveland Browns (5-2)Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2)Denver Broncos (5-2)Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2)Cincinnati Bengals (4-2)On the bubble: 8. New England Patriots (4-3), 9. Baltimore Ravens (4-3), 10. Las Vegas Raiders (3-4), 11. New York Jets (2-5), 12. Indianapolis Colts (2-5), 13. Houston Texans (2-5)Not yet eliminated, but let’s be real here: 14. Miami Dolphins (1-5), 15. Tennessee Titans (1-6), 16. Los Angeles Chargers (0-6)As noted above, the Patriots found themselves in the ninth seed coming out of Thursday’s game. However, the Bengals and Ravens playing each other on Sunday meant that at least one of those teams would drop below New England when all was said and done. It was the Ravens, who lost 35-13 despite taking a 13-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. That one game was not enough to catapult the Patriots back into the top seven, though, because both the Broncos and Steelers ended up winning their contests; the former won 30-16 in Arizona, and the latter 16-10 against the Saints in Paris. Both have a worse conference record than New England at the moment — with the Patriots also holding the head-to-head advantage over Pittsburgh — but remain ahead in the standings. At the top of the conference, the Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the season. Patrick Mahomes and company were unable to play competent offensive football against the Seahawks on Sunday night, losing 20-3.
