Paul Pierce gives thoughts on LeBron James possibly joining Sixers

The Philadelphia 76ers have largely completed their offseason plans, but one roster spot remains potentially open for a future Hall of Famer. There’s no secret that the Sixers are eyeing LeBron James. The 41-year-old veteran is entering his 24th season and will be chasing one more championship, with Philadelphia firmly in the mix as a likely landing spot. A starting five of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and James would arguably be the best lineup in the Eastern Conference, and Philadelphia would still have a strong depth chart off the bench, featuring Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, Labaron Philon Jr., and Dominick Barlow. Taken as a whole, the roster would be formidable.
Yet, Paul Pierce, the Boston Celtics legend, has voiced opposition to the idea of James joining the Sixers. He argues that if LeBron were to sign with Philadelphia, it could diminish the GOAT narrative he’s built over the years. “If LeBron goes to Philly, it takes him totally out of the GOAT debate,” Pierce said. “No player that we consider in the GOAT conversation has ever been a fourth option. Like, Michael Jordan, even when he went to the Wizards, was still the first option. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the second option with Magic Johnson. When we start having these debates about the GOAT and we say, well, you know, Philly won a championship, but he was a fourth option, he has five rings, but fourth and fifth option. So, it’ll do something to his legacy. I really believe that. GOATs don’t take backseats to anyone who wasn’t considered a GOAT themselves, you know what I’m saying?”
Pierce has never shied away from offering his opinions, especially when LeBron James is involved, and there may be some merit to his point. A player of James’ caliber rarely slides into a secondary role, but there’s also the reality that he is 41 and still averaging well over 20 points per game. That level of production remains remarkable, and it’s one of the reasons the idea of LeBron joining the Sixers gets so much attention. If he did make the move to Philadelphia, it would likely provide a substantial boost to the Sixers’ title hopes for the 2026-27 season.
This discussion was first reported by Sixers Wire, and it centers on the potential implications of LeBron James joining Philadelphia and how such a move could affect the broader GOAT conversation, as well as the on-court dynamics and championship prospects for the Sixers.
