Paul Pogba (33) could depart after only one season of his two-year contract at AS Monaco, according to comments from the principality club’s chief executive, Thiago Scuro. Pogba joined Monaco last year following the end of a doping ban, and expectations had been high given his pedigree. Yet, his time in Monaco failed to illuminate as hoped, with a meagre tally of six appearances, just one start, and a total of 115 minutes on the pitch. Those figures underscored a disappointing spell and did little to enhance his prospects of forcing his way back into the France national team, something he had hoped for.
As Monaco moves to trim its wage bill, Pogba is among the players who could be offloaded. When asked about the French midfielder’s future by Get French Football News, Scuro said it was a difficult subject, noting the deep respect the club holds for Pogba both as a person and as a professional. He added that Pogba arrived with the club’s project carrying high expectations, which did not materialize in the way both sides had anticipated. “We have to be fair with him, follow his preparation each week, assess how he progresses physically and technically, and then it will be the manager’s decision,” Scuro explained.
The comments come as Monaco introduced Filipe Luís as their new manager. While avoiding direct reference to Pogba, the new boss described him as a “special player” with whom he would converse in the coming days, along with the rest of the squad.
Scuro reiterated the club’s measured approach: “We have the summer to see what level Pogba can reach. He could leave at the end of the summer.” He stressed that Monaco maintains an open and transparent relationship with Pogba: “If, at any point, the player’s expectations diverge from the club’s, we will talk to find a solution. The performance on the pitch will provide all the answers we need. He might stay, or he might leave.”
The situation remains fluid as Monaco assesses its squad and budgetary needs ahead of the next season. Scuro underscored that the club’s priority is alignment between Pogba’s development and the club’s broader objectives, with the patient, ongoing evaluation continuing through the summer to determine the best path forward for both Pogba and AS Monaco.
