Penguins End UGLY Skid, Tighten Up in SO WIN

Connor Dewar’s harmless backhand sweep toward the net was ticketed for Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger’s chest, and yet another whistle in the subdued, defensive struggle was forthcoming. But that’s when the game changed as Dewar’s backhand ramped off Dallas defenseman Liam Bichsel’s stick over a waiting Oettinger and just under the crossbar for the first goal of the game. It took until 1:57 in the third period for either team to light the lamp, and it was the Penguins’ first lead in more than three full games. And they almost continued the tight play through the end, but Tyler Seguin deflected Jason Robertson’s shot with 29 seconds remaining, and for the second time in two nights, the Penguins needed a shootout. It took an extra round, but the Penguins (3-2-1) scored three goals in the shootout to beat Dallas (2-2-1) 2-1 Saturday at PPG Paints Arena.Unmistakably, the Penguins were vastly improved from their recent spate of disjointed and uninspired play. The shot totals were not great, but puck possession and professional play provided them a steady base until Dewar’s goal. The shots after two periods were a pedestrian 15-13 for the Penguins, and the high-danger scoring chances were negligible, but the Penguins’ passes were to teammates, not opponents. The Penguins lineup underwent a couple of changes, as coach Dan Muse reinserted Elmer Soderblom into the lineup in place of Ville Koivunen. The Penguins announced before the game that defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk suffered a lower-body injury and is out day-to-day, and his absence created a spot for newly acquired Spencer Stastney–a natural left defenseman–to make his Penguins debut. The Penguins acquired Stastney for Filip Hallander on Wednesday rather than put a forward on waivers.A night after giving up 45 shots to the Columbus Blue Jackets and forcing rookie goalie Sergei Murashov to make a myriad of game-saving stops, the Penguins protected netminder Arturs Silovs Saturday. They allowed just two high-danger scoring chances in the first 40 minutes, according to NaturalStatTrick.com.Arturs Silovs made 21 saves on 22 shots in regulation, including a sparkling pad save on Tyler Seguin with 37 seconds remaining. Oettinger stopped 20 before being pulled for the extra attacker. Dallas’s 6v5 goal was the third such tally the Penguins have allowed this season after allowing two against the Montreal Canadiens in the second game of the season. Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson had a wide-open net in overtime, but his one-timer was deflected wide by a defenseman. Goal Recap0-0: The goal was called back at 19:33. Defenseman Kris Letang charged to the net, but goalie Jake Oettinger made the first save. However, in the resulting chaos in front of the net, Dallas winger Justin Hryckowian accidentally put the loose puck in his own net. However, Dallas’s challenge for a high-stick on the puck earlier in the play by Hendrix Lapierre overturned the goal. 1-0: It was not a heavy press
