As reports suggested the pursuit began as soon as Ja Morant arrived, the Portland Trail Blazers’ bid for Jaylen Brown ended abruptly on Wednesday. In a shocking move, the Boston Celtics traded Brown to their rival, the Philadelphia 76ers, in exchange for Paul George, two future first-rounders, and two future second-rounders. Portland had been aggressively pursuing Brown for months, riding the Morant trade that sent Jerami Grant and Khris Murray to the Memphis Grizzlies. Brown had long been seen as a potential pivot if Portland missed out on Giannis Antetokounmpo, who ultimately went to the Miami Heat. But before the “Greek Freak” found his home in South Beach, a Brown trade would have made sense for Boston, which appeared to be seeking a third team to balance a deal for Antetokounmpo and adequately compensate Milwaukee. Portland seemed like a leading candidate, given they owned control of the Bucks’ picks in 2028 and 2030, and sending those selections back to Milwaukee was considered Portland’s likely path to Brown. That deal never materialized, nor did Boston come close to matching the value it could have received for the 2024 Finals MVP. This raises the question: if it only took George plus a couple of future firsts and seconds to get Brown, why did the Blazers walk away? It’s possible a Brown-to-Portland move would have forced a small-ball lineup with Morant and Damian Lillard as the backcourt, with Brown at the three. While not a perfect fit, the talent could have been transcendent—especially for the price. A compelling argument could be made that a Blazers offer centered on Jrue Holiday and either Shaedon Sharpe or Scoot Henderson, plus additional draft capital, might have been more valuable than Boston’s return. Such a deal could also address Portland’s backcourt logjam. Even for someone who didn’t see a seamless fit for Morant, Lillard, and Brown, the post-trade return invites reflection on why the Blazers—or other teams—didn’t jump at the chance. Perhaps there is more to Brown’s situation with Boston than meets the eye, but until further information emerges, Portland must accept the reality that a desirable target is now wearing another team’s jersey.
