Around Major League Baseball, a number of clubs have been notably disappointing, even as some have begun turning things around lately. Among them, the Chicago Cubs sit in a murky middle, with critics calling them disappointing and others arguing they’ve been solid. Now 46-38, Chicago faces important trade-deadline choices, even if they decide to act as buyers. There’s a strong sense that the Cubs will add at the deadline, given how talented this roster looks. Still, with several players likely to hit free agency after this season, it’s reasonable to weigh both buying and selling options.
One potential trade candidate is Seiya Suzuki, the right-handed-hitting outfielder who brings some pop to the lineup. Suzuki hasn’t been flawless defensively, but he contributes offensively, currently batting .262 with 12 homers, 37 RBIs, and 66 hits. He recently drew interest from the Phillies as a possible fit, though that chatter came during a stretch when Chicago’s howls of inconsistency were louder.
The Cubs, sitting at 35-34 earlier in the season, were built to contend, and there’s every chance they find their stride in the coming weeks. It’s worth noting that the presence of a third wild-card spot in each league lowers the bar for contending. If Chicago does decide to part with Suzuki, he could appeal to Philadelphia, as CBS noted, highlighting Suzuki’s 116 OPS+ with 10 homers in 55 games this season, and his career OPS+ of 128 over portions of five seasons with the Cubs. Suzuki isn’t eligible for free agency until after next season.
With the swirling chatter surrounding Suzuki, it wouldn’t be surprising if Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer explores a deal. Hoyer has a track record of moving on from players approaching free agency, especially if the return aligns with the club’s short- or long-term goals. It makes sense to consider a trade now unless the Cubs truly believe they can win a World Series with Suzuki or secure an extension. Meanwhile, Philadelphia could pursue a different path—adding a veteran who can contribute immediately rather than waiting on a long-term fit.
