​It turns out the roster building phase isn’t over for the Phoenix Suns after all.Much panic has ensued amongst the fanbase in the days since center Mark Williams underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum.While there is confidence in Phoenix’s roster at-large, skepticism endures when discussing the team’s thin center rotation. General manager Brian Gregory made a decisive statement in this sphere on Wednesday night by signing a prized free agent big man.Shams Charania of ESPN was the first to report the signing. “The Phoenix Suns are signing center Duop Reath to a deal, sources tell ESPN. With Mark Williams (shoulder) sidelined for several months, the Suns add the former Portland Trail Blazers big man for frontcourt depth on the roster.”The reports of Reath being of interest to Phoenix came from local insider John Gambadoro within an hour of Charania’s breaking of the news. Gambadoro revealed that the agreement is of the one-year, veteran minimum variety, and that Reath chose the Suns over several other suitors.Reath, 30, went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft, subsequently working his way towards reaching the league for five years. The South Sudanese-Australian center eventually found his way onto an NBA roster, spending two-and-a-half years with the Portland Trail Blazers.The LSU product displayed the most promise in his first season in Portland, shooting 35.9% from three-point range on 3.6 attempts per night in 2023-24. While Reath did display promise during his time in Portland, the franchise ultimately had a logjam at the center spot. Between rostering Donovan Clingan, Rob Williams II, and Yang Hansen, there wasn’t much of a spot for the 7-footer. A trade to the Atlanta Hawks was completed at the beginning of February, and Reath was released four days later. Now, Reath rebuffs a number of interested suitors to choose Phoenix. Reath will now slot in alongside the second-year prodigy Khaman Maluach, as well as former second-round pick Oso Ighodaro. The assumption is that Ighodaro will begin the season in the starting role, although Maluach owns a ceiling that is enticing to buy stock in at this time. Reap provides a stabilizing force for the Suns as a third big, also bringing a hint of floor-spacing with him. The other development is that two-way F/C CJ Huntley can now focus fully on developing in the G-League, giving the Suns more time to cultivate a promising prospect in the process.This gives head coach Jordan Ott and staff options, while also lending a way for the Suns’ front office to add to the roster without making a trade. All in all, this is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Suns, with multiple other teams displaying interest serving as evidence that Reath can make a real difference.
